Platelets are cells that are part of your blood. This procedure is a natural approach using your own healing powers stored in your blood. Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentrate of your own blood that comprises of high numbers of platelets.

Collagen stimulants are the elixir of youth and freshen, thicken and improve the texture and tone of your ageing skin. Because it stimulates the growth and quality of your own collagen, it gives a natural look without the risk of ‘looking done’.

The product is a 100% your own blood by-product and is sometimes referred to as ‘autologous platelet therapy’. Because it is a part of your own blood, it will not cause hypersensitivity or allergic reactions.

Platelets, which are clotting components in our blood, contain numerous collagen stimulating growth factors. They play a crucial role in the prevention of bleeding and the promotion of healing and repair.

The platelets release these growth factors when stimulated, initiating the healing and rejuvenating process in targeted areas such as the face, neck, décolletage and hands.

You will have seen your own plasma (a straw coloured fluid) in your own healing wounds at some time in your life. This is nature’s elixir to heal the skin.

After your treatment you will experience some swelling where the fluid has been injected under the skin. This will persist for approximately two days, occasionally longer.

Bruising is possible and this risk is increased after any blood thinning agents such as ibuprofen, aspirin, fish or krill oil or multivitamins are taken in the preceding two weeks.

Collagen stimulation is a process that usually takes about three to six months to begin. Occasionally, results begin a bit sooner at 6 weeks but often the results are only becoming noticeable by three months. Very little occurs before then.

The improvement in skin texture and tone continues for about 9 months to a year after the procedure.

The effects are long-lasting as it is your own collagen that is stimulated and not a bio-degradable dermal filler which will disappear over time.

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy can be combined with virtually any other cosmetic treatment, including:

• Dermal Fillers and Muscle Relaxant injections
• Laser and light therapies
• Skin chemical peels and microdermabrasion.

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy acts to accelerate and improve the results of these other therapies by first improving the quality of the skin being treated.

A blood test is performed by one of our experienced clinical aesthetic team and your own blood sample is used to harvest the platelets which are rich in collagen stimulating factors. The amount of blood needed is between 6 to 60 mls, depending on the number of areas being treated. Your blood sample is spun down in the centrifuge.

This process of centrifuging your blood sample separates your plasma into different layers. The platelet rich layer is extracted and then injected just under your skin surface, either with a needle or using a needle free technique with a cannula which is a small blunt tube.

The complete process takes approximately one hour.

How many treatments of Platelet Rich Plasma or ‘Vampire Facial’ is required?
It is recommended to have three treatments one month apart.

An annual or two yearly maintenance treatment may further enhance results and slow down the natural ongoing ageing process.

The small injections are quite comfortable. The needle is smaller than that commonly used by diabetics to inject their insulin.

To further minimise discomfort, we often use ice as well to minimise discomfort. Taking two paracetamol tablets one hour prior to the procedure can also help. Avoid ibuprofen (Advil or Nurofen) as this can increase bruising.

People with blood disorders or infectious blood borne diseases such as Hepatitis cannot have Platelet Rich Plasma therapy.
